What is a xenon lamp weather resistance test device? (What is a xenon lamp weather meter?) is a weather resistance test device that uses a discharge lamp (xenon lamp) filled with xenon gas as a light source. Of all accelerated weather resistance test devices, it has the spectral distribution closest to sunlight. Due to its high correlation with outdoor exposure that is close to sunlight, it has become the most standard weather resistance test device internationally. In Japan, the switch from the once mainstream open frame carbon arc weather resistance testers to this weather resistance test device is progressing, and its introduction is increasing.

Japanese Industry is Shifting to the Xenon Lamp Method.

In Japan, it was the industry mainstream to use carbon arc lamp method (Ultraviolet rays carbon arc lamp method, or sunshine carbon arc lamp method) for climatic wear testing devices. These testing devices are used in various places. The main reason for this is that there are various accumulated data in each industry or companies, and changing the testing device runs the risk of not being able to use the data anymore. But for the following reasons, the industry is shifting to the xenon lamp method.

  1. Countries outside of Japan mainly use xenon lamp method, so it is necessary to test in xenon for those companies who work with overseas companies/industries.
  2. The xenon lamp method is becoming mainstream of the testing for JIS Standard. It is common to use xenon lamp method for ISO.
  3. Xenon lamp method only requires maintenance about once a month if you have the right facility.
  4. In regards to the acceleration feature, it was said to be that the carbon method was better than xenon lamp method, but since the release of the high illuminance type xenon lamp method climatic wear testing device, the acceleration has become about the same or better. (It depends on the illuminance of the xenon lamp method, or the filter of the carbon type.)

What is a xenon lamp?

A xenon lamp is an artificial light source that uses light emitted by discharge in xenon gas. Its spectral distribution consists of a uniform continuous spectrum from the ultraviolet to the visible range and a strong line spectrum in the near infrared range, and the visible range in particular is close to natural daylight, so it is also used as a light source that approximates sunlight.

Compliance Standard for a Climatic Wear Testing Device Using Xenon Arc Lamp Method

The xenon lamp method was also adopted for the paint general test methods of JIS standard for paints, plastics, building materials, fibers (dyeing fastness, blue scale, gray scale), etc. This is also compliant with JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization).
