LEDioc HIGH-BAY Γ luminaires deliver bright, uniform light to an airy and open in-dome space
Add to My ListSituated in the Yahata-Nishi district of Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, the all-weather, multi-purpose Kitakyushu Ano Dome is the first domed sporting facility to be opened in the city. A two-storey facility with a site area of 18565 m² and a total floor area of 8717 m², its foundations are made of reinforced concrete, and its roof is formed of a suspension frame membrane structure. The tensioned beam structure of the arched roof sits above an open space the size of six tennis courts (approximately 108m x 62m), where the interior design scheme is characterized by a hybrid construction featuring steel and wooden structural cables, evoking a forest-like imagery. Since its opening in 1994 it has played host to a wide variety of events, tournaments and sporting competitions, in addition to serving as a hub of health and wellbeing; the venue is widely appreciated as a setting that can be enjoyed by all, whatever the weather, across all seasons and across all demographics.
In September 2025 authorities at Kitakyushu City carried out works to upgrade the lighting installation to LED, with the aims of reducing environmental impact and running costs through energy conservation, whilst also achieving increased illuminance levels. Providing brightness levels equivalent to 1000W metal halide lamps, the installation of LEDioc HIGH-BAY Γ class 4000 fixtures has allowed for the number of installed fixtures to be reduced from 160 to 100 units relative to the existing mercury lamp based scheme, whilst still ensuring design illuminance of over 500ℓx and in turn delivering a comfortable lighting environment in tandem with energy savings. In the process of the works, safety factors such as ensuring brighter and more uniform illuminance whilst also reducing glare were key considerations, as was the need for the new scheme to complement the existing setting and not detract from features such as the design and sense of space within the dome.
The change to LED lighting is delivering energy saving benefits with reductions in electricity costs compared to the previous scheme, and furthermore the space has become noticeably brighter even by night, with positive feedback from users noting it to be a brighter and more user-friendly space than previously.
