  • Six 1300W class LED floodlights light pollution prevention DALI compatible type, mounted on a lighting column.

  • The back stretch, where the lighting is focused solely on the course to provide a high quality lighting environment with excellent visibility.

  • Nighttime view of the 1200m lap counterclockwise running dirt track. Forty lighting towers of 18m-20m in height have been installed in an arrangement that is mindful of minimizing glare and light spillage whilst ensuring the delivery of bright, uniform light levels. The lighting controls system enabled with additional backup ensure constant illuminance during races.

  • View from around the fourth corner, of the home stretch where surface illuminance levels are maintained at an average of 600ℓx.

  • With consideration for the surrounding environment, comprehensive countermeasures against light spillage ensure that the appropriate light is focused only on the course.

March, 2023

Situated in Saitama City, Urawa Racecourse is rated highly by many as a venue where the thrills of horse racing can be enjoyed from up close, thanks to the proximity of the track and paddocks to the spectator area. With a history spanning 75 years, the convenient location of the venue only 15 minutes by foot from Minami-Urawa and Urawa stations makes it easily accessible not only for people from the Saitama area, but also its neighboring prefectures and beyond.

In March 2023 the Saitama Prefecture Urawa Horse Racing Association carried out works to install lighting along the track for the first time in the history of the venue. With the location of the racecourse being near a residential area, it was vital that comprehensive measures against light pollution were in place when installing the lighting towers. As such, LED floodlights light pollution prevention DALI compatible type selected for the project, which designed to offer the restriction of upward light spill. In order to satisfy the stringent criteria applied to lighting within the track area, lighting techniques such as precision aiming, and individual tailoring of the output levels of each luminaire were creatively applied to deliver uniform light levels across the track and create an optimal racing environment in tandem with a lighting environment that would not adversely impact upon its surroundings. The need to execute precision dimming adjustments to meet specified lighting requirements saw the incorporation of the ITACS-LC operation system with DALI controls into the scheme in order to facilitate such adjustments.

With a view to ensuring stable operation as a public sporting facility, the lighting controls systems have been set up to incorporate wireless operation as backup to the main fiber-optic cable setup. The system not only utilizes fiber optic cable which is highly resistant against electromagnetic waves, but is also equipped to switch to wireless transmission to the luminaires in the unlikely event of problems or failures arising with the metal communications cables or control equipment. Through the completion of a lighting scheme that delivers uniform illuminance along the track whilst also restricting light spillage into the surrounding areas, the result is a lighting environment where the excitement of racing can continue to be enjoyed beyond sunset.
