June, 2025

Located in Toyoake City, Aichi Prefecture, Chukyo Racecourse is one of the key racecourses of the Japan Racing Association (JRA), regularly hosting highly prestigious Grade I events such as the Takamatsunomiya Kinen Race and the Champions Cup. The dynamic counter-clockwise running course is equipped both with turf and dirt tracks which feature long straits and gentle undulations demanding both speed and stamina, frequently delivering the engaging and exciting races for which the venue is renowned. The grounds also include play areas for children as well as food and beverage facilities, making it a popular destination for families looking to enjoy a full day of fun, not limited to only viewing the races.

As part of its program of measures against excessive heat during the summer season, renovation works were carried out on the exterior lighting facilities at the course in June 2025 with the key aim of delivering the appropriate illuminance levels that would enable to expand the race time period. The high-efficiency, glare minimizing LEDioc FLOOD ZEST class 1100 and class 500 floodlights selected for the scheme have been mounted on concrete columns, steel pipe columns, patrol towers and the grandstand building, delivering a comfortable lit environment with high levels of visibility; the scheme design is also mindful of its impact on the jockeys, with installation angles of the fixtures adjusted to minimize glare.

The lighting scheme has been designed to ensure horizontal illuminance on both the turf and dirt tracks is above the standard value of 110ℓx, while vertical illuminance around the finish line has been designed to meet the range of 110ℓx - 300ℓx as specified in various standards. The effective combination of wide, medium and narrow beam angle models has enabled the delivery of a lit environment with high levels of uniformity, accentuating the dynamism, excitement and sense of occasion, right through to the final race.
