Converting night-game lighting to LED to create a higher-level lighting environment at a baseball stadium that continues to be loved by many people
Add to My ListLocated in the outer garden of Meiji Jingu Shrine, Meiji Jingu Stadium is an historic stadium built in 1926. Popularly known as Jingu Stadium, it is the home of the Central League's Tokyo Yakult Swallows professional baseball team and holy ground for student baseball, including the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League. A such, it has seen many fiercely contested battles, as well as many professional and amateur games and various events such as concerts. It is located in a section of Meiji Jingu Gaien (meaning "outer garden"), which is famous for its rows of gingko trees that stretch for around 300 meters and features a lush green environment in the city center along with easy access.
The night-game lighting equipment for illuminating the stadium was installed in 1962, and then refurbished in 1985 and 1986, and to date, a mixture of lighting - metal-halide lamps and high pressure sodium lamps - had been used. The switch to LED lights aimed to achieve high energy efficiency by controlling electricity usage and maintenance costs, reduce running costs, and ensure a comfortable lighting environment for players, spectators, and television broadcasts. When converting the night-game lighting equipment to LEDs, we used a method involving installation on the existing lighting towers instead of along the roof-line, and being mindful of keeping light-clusters small and creating no sources of glare in order to avoid any effects on games, we chose LED floodlights from Iwasaki Electric for the lighting equipment after a making comprehensive judgement on their track record with respect to steel-tower lighting equipment for outdoor baseball fields. The existing 756 HID floodlights (504 metal-halide lamp floodlights (1000W) + 252 high pressure sodium lamp floodlights (660W)) were replaced with 720 highly efficient and high-color-rendering LEDioc FLOOD ZEST LED floodlights, reducing total power consumption by approximately 44%. The number of fixtures was reduced while ensuring the same level of illumination provided by the previous lighting, and optimum design brightness is maintained in the lighting from the time of its installation until the end of its life by means of initial illuminance correction. In addition, we were able to create a good lighting environment by improving the uniformity of the brightness while maintaining the spatial illuminance necessary for professional baseball, and also taking glare reduction into account. It also incorporates a dimming function (100% - 25%) that is compatible with wireless dimming systems, allowing us to fine-tune the brightness.
The upgrade to LED lighting has been well received by players, who have commented that the ball is easier to see, and compared to the televised images broadcast up until last year, there is a real sense that the improved color-rendering has made the footage clearer and brighter, with photographers commenting how easy it is for them to take pictures.
