Producing a high-quality lit environment whilst suppressing glare and light spillage into surrounding areas

Add to My List
  • LED
  •
  • Stadium-wide view from the second tier of the stand behind the back net. At its full setting, the lighting provides the illumination levels required for professional baseball, creating a high-quality lit environment.

  • View of the stadium, from the center of the back screen.

  • View into the ground from the 3rd base (left) side. The floodlights atop the roof and on the lighting towers have been upgraded to LED. From recreational level through to professional level, the lighting has been calculated and designed to provide an ample lighting environment for the players, offering a high level of uniformity.

  • The ground is illuminated through a combination of two different LED floodlight models - LEDioc FLOOD DUELL and LEDioc FLOOD ZEST - which have been installed atop the roofs of the stands.

  • LED floodlight arrangement on the lighting towers. Retaining the four existing light tower, only the floodlights themselves were replaced, with LEDioc FLOOD DUELL and LEDioc FLOOD ZEST units being deployed in an interwoven arrangement. Designed in a cross-directional arrangement has reduced the overlapping of light, helping to suppress glare and avoid impacting negatively upon playing conditions.

  • The lighting controls system allows for different lighting arrangements to suit different applications to be found easily thanks to its touchscreen panel.

Affectionately known as Botchan Stadium, the site of Matsuyama Central Park Baseball Stadium was moved from Shiroyama Park to Matsuyama Central Park in the year 2000, seeing the construction of the only baseball stadium in Shikoku capable of seating 30000+ spectators. Measuring 99.1m outwards from the home plate on each flank, and 122m to the center-field fence, the stadium meets the size requirements for hosting games at professional level; equipped also with the facilities to host night games, it is a stadium befitting for Ehime, where baseball is popular. Through the specification of mixed black soil for the infield and natural grass for the outfield areas, emphasis has been placed on creating a field that is gentle and easy to play on for players of all levels, from high school baseball through to professional level. In an average year the stadium will play host to at least 2 professional games, and in 2022 it is also scheduled to host the NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) All-Star Game - an event it has hosted on two previous occasions.

Driven by the aims of preparing the stadium for the upcoming All-Star Game, and by the City of Matsuyama's ongoing efforts towards energy reduction, March 2021 saw the completion of the improvement works which were carried out on the stadium, including the upgrading to LED of the lighting for night games. Upgrading from the existing 2kW short arc metal halide lamps, and 1kW metal halide lamps, high-output LEDioc FLOOD DUELL 1300W floodlights, and glare-suppressing, high color-rendering, high-efficiency LEDioc FLOOD ZEST class 1100 floodlights were installed. A reduction in the number of installed units was able to be achieved through a combination of two types of LED floodlight to optimize light distribution, producing the required illumination levels of 2500ℓx in the batting circle, 2000ℓx in the infield, and 1500ℓx in the outfield whilst also saving energy; the outfield illumination of 1500ℓx is actually the highest to be seen at a provincial baseball stadium in Western Japan.

Employing a cross-directional arrangement when designing for the change of the stadium's lighting to LED, the mass of glare which can emanate from light towers to the detriment of batters and fielders alike, has been minimized. Furthermore the majority of the floodlights installed on top of the 1st base side stand, and on the right side light tower have been equipped with louvers to reduce the amount of light spillage outside the stadium, with consideration for the private residences located near the left side (3rd base) stand. The lighting controls system has been designed for ease of use, allowing for illumination levels to be easily adjusted through a touchscreen panel to meet a variety of applications from recreational through to professional level, and providing a lighting environment that is both pleasant and user-friendly.
