  • The 6m wide two-lane road in the tunnel is illuminated by LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series luminaires to deliver appropriate illuminance levels along both horizontal and vertical planes.

Opened in September 2023, the new National Route 401 Hakasetoge Bypass connects Aizumisato Town and Showa Village in Fukushima Prefecture. Works on the 7.5km road were commenced by the Prefectural authorities in 2017, with the Hakase Tunnel making up a section of around 4.5km. Hakasetoge had long been a problematic traffic area due to the succession of sharp curves and steep slopes along its narrow road. Whilst previously the route was often also closed off during times of snowfall, the opening of the bypass now allows for passage throughout the year; it is anticipated that the bypass will reduce regular journey times by around 10 minutes, and by as much as 40 minutes during winter seasons where previously diversions and detours were necessary.

LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series tunnel luminaires have been installed to provide the lighting both inside and at the entrances of the Hakasetoge tunnel, which is the longest under the management of the prefecture. Considering the significant length of the tunnel, EYE TUNNEL Automatic Dimmer units have been installed to detect the light levels at each entrance and in turn ensure the illuminance is set to an appropriate level.

Additionally, installations for emergencies are linked to remote monitoring control devices as well as receiver controls within the construction management office, doubling up on automated surveillance and controls, and subsequently delivering and maintaining safe, bright light along the tunnel of a bypass which is contributing to greater convenience for the people of the area.
