Tunnel Lighting
Baiko TunnelMito City, Ibaraki Prefecture
Tunnel running through the city center is illuminated for safety and comfort with LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series luminaires
Add to My ListPart of National Route 349, the 607m length Baiko Tunnel runs beneath and through the central district of Mito City.
Since its opening in 2002, it has led to an easing of the chronic congestion issues around the city's intersections and National Route 50, reductions of journey times to around a third, and consequently a shortening of the time taken to traverse the city thanks to the reduced traffic levels.
With 2022 marking 20 years since the opening of the tunnel, the Civil Engineering Office of Ibaraki Prefecture undertook improvement works to replace the lighting fixtures which had deteriorated over time, with new LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series luminaires. Designed for a speed of 50km/h (average road surface illuminance of 1.9cd/m² or over), the overall design uniformity of the tunnel is set at 0.4 or over and lane axial uniformity at 0.6 or over; with a long rated LED module life of 90000hrs, the LED tunnel luminaires represent a low-maintenance solution in delivering a bright and pleasant light to the tunnel which has become indispensable to the city's residents.
