With its entrance located below Aomi Station on the Tokyo Waterfront New Transit Waterfront Line, Aomi Tunnel is linked to the Aomi-Jukan Line, which acts as an access route connecting Ariake and Aomi in the Tokyo Waterfront City to the Central Breakwater Area. Its position in an area which serves as an important logistical transport hub ensures a high volume of heavy goods vehicle traffic, and consequently there are also further developments under way in the vicinity, including the construction of another route running parallel to the Aomi-Jukan Line.

Lighting improvement works on the tunnel with two lanes each way, saw the existing sodium installations replaced with LED luminaires on the northbound side in 2019 and the southbound side in 2021. Using LEDioc TUNNEL KWE Series LED tunnel luminaires for the lighting of the main tunnel and at their entrances, illuminance levels have been increased despite a reduction in the number of installed units, enabling the transition to a long-life and energy saving scheme.

A renewal of the distribution board in the electrical control room has also allowed for a renewal of the automatic dimming controls system, providing the facility to implement precision controls to specified lighting levels appropriate to the time of day; effective use of the three output levels set for the main tunnel lighting (100% / 50% / 32%) and four levels for the entrances (100% / 75% / 50% / 25%) ensures a safe and pleasant visual environment for drivers passing through the tunnel. In keeping with the theme of renewal with LED, the lighting outside the tunnels is provided by LEDioc ROAD street luminaires.
