  • The lighting scheme has been designed to make the line of the road easier to see, with the hard shoulder and central reservation having been made more visible and giving them added value as a visual guide.

  • Dimming controls are utilized to reduce the disparity between brightness levels with the outside road and improve safety, by adjusting to match environmental variables such as the time of day and weather conditions.

  • Providing bright illumination inside the tunnel is the LEDioc TUNNEL KWE Series - a low-maintenance fixture offering improved efficiency and reduced consumption, which benefits from a rated LED module lifespan of 90000hrs.

  • Daytime view of the entrance of the Hiratsuto Tunnel, measuring 3159m in length.

  • LEDioc ROAD fixtures have been installed by the entrances of the tunnels.

Installation date

March, 2021

Designated as a key reconstruction support route in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the Miyako-Morioka East-West Highway (National Route 106) which connects the cities of Miyako to the east and Morioka to the west, was fully completed in March 2021. With the recent completion of the Hiratsuto/Iwai - Matsukusa section, the completion of the whole route has significantly reduced the required journey time between the two cities. It is hoped that this will in turn give rise to a plethora of positive developments, such as the promotion of improved connectivity and cooperation between coastal and inland areas, faster and safer emergency transport links, and a far-reaching stimulus to sectors such as tourism and logistics.

The lighting at the entrances and inside the four tunnels (Yobezawa; Hiratsuto; Iwai 1; Iwai 2) newly constructed on the 7km long Hiratsuto-Matsukusa Route within this section is provided by the LED tunnel light LEDioc TUNNEL KWE Series; a finely tuned dimming program has also been incorporated, with three brightness levels set for inside the tunnel (100%, 50%, 32%), and four levels for the tunnel entrances (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%).

Additionally, the waterproof linear LED fixture LEDioc MULTILINE has been used to illuminate the emergency escape connected to the Hiratsuto Tunnel, As a high-specification road designed solely for automobile use, there is a steel-constructed central reservation separating the lanes of oncoming traffic. With the lighting plan calculated based on illumination at 80km/h, careful consideration was given to the ratio of illuminance between the road surface and wall surfaces during the design process, seeking to create conditions which feel safe and comfortable for drivers. The hard shoulder and the central reservations have also been made highly visible, giving them added value as visual guides to make the line of the road easier to follow, and in turn creating a very user-friendly road.
