  • With careful consideration for illuminance levels both on the road surface and the vertical plane, the primary lighting inside the tunnels is provided by the LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series, which offers improved efficiency and is more compact and lightweight thanks to its aluminum body.

  • Nighttime view around the entrance to Katasu Tunnel.

  • The compact, aluminum body LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series has been installed to provide the primary lighting.

  • LEDioc Tunnel KAE Series, used for the tunnel entrance lighting.

  • The light of the LED street luminaire LEDioc ROAD ensures the interchange with the main trunk road is bright and safe.

  • In certain sections, rear shading louvers have been attached to the LED street luminaire LEDioc ROAD, so as to avoid light spillage into the surrounding areas.

Designated as a key reconstruction support route in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the Miyako-Morioka East-West Highway (National Route 106) which connects the cities of Miyako to the east and Morioka to the west was fully completed in March 2021. The route features numerous tunnels, with four (Katasu; Kami-Kawai; Kawai 1; Kawai 2) situated within the 7km section between Kawai and Hakoishi, and a further four (Haratai-Suijin; Haratai-Shimizu; Moichi; Hikime) within the 7km section between Hikime and Haratai.

To provide the primary lighting inside the tunnels and at the entrances, the aluminum-body LED tunnel light fixture LEDioc TUNNEL KAE Series was chosen. A finely tuned dimming program has also been incorporated into the scheme, with three brightness levels set for the primary lighting inside the tunnels (100%, 50%, 32%), and four levels for the tunnel entrances (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%). As a high-specification road designed solely for automobile use, there is a steel-constructed central reservation separating the lanes of oncoming traffic. With the lighting plan calculated based on illumination at 80km/h, careful consideration was given to the ratio of illuminance between the road surface and wall surfaces during the design process, seeking to create conditions which feel safe and comfortable for drivers. The hard shoulder and the central reservations have also been made highly visible, giving them added value as visual guides to make the line of the road easier to follow, and in turn creating a highly user-friendly road.

The interchanges with the main trunk road have been designed and constructed to ensure the smooth flow and merging of traffic from the existing roads; these areas have been illuminated with the LEDioc ROAD, with rear shading louvers attached in some locations to further minimize light spillage and subsequently any light pollution that may affect residents in the neighboring areas.
