Rissho University is an establishment rich in history and tradition, having celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022. A comprehensive establishment of 9 faculties, 16 departments, 7 graduate schools, and approximately 10,000 students, the university is spread across two campuses - the Shinagawa Campus located in the heart of Tokyo, and the Kumagaya Campus which boasts a vast site of around 350,000 square meters and is equipped with a lineup of sporting facilities amongst the most comprehensive in Japan, including an athletics stadium, soccer field, baseball field, rugby field, tennis courts, and training rooms.

In response to market circumstances such as the ban on the manufacture and import of mercury lamps and the end of HID lamp production, and also to evolving societal expectations and norms such as the reduction of CO₂ emissions, promoting of energy savings and reduction of maintenance, Rissho University has been gradually converting the lighting at its university buildings and outdoor sports facilities to LED. As part of this, work to convert the lighting installations at the athletics stadium and tennis courts to LED was carried out in February 2025; completion of these works meant all of the lighting installations at outdoor facilities on campus have now been converted to LED. High-efficiency LEDioc FLOOD AVANT class400 floodlights were selected to update the lighting in the athletics stadium and tennis courts, with the aim of ensuring brightness levels matching or bettering those of the existing HID lighting, as well as minimizing the glare that can be detrimental to play. With previous LED conversion works having attracted negative feedback from some coaches and students regarding excessive brightness and the uneven distribution of it, the brief for the latest works was for a design scheme that was mindful of suppressing glare and delivering uniform of light levels. This latest round of LED upgrade works has received altogether more positive feedback regarding increased illuminance, and no major issues with visibility. Contributing to reducing energy costs, the LED lighting has created a comfortable lighting environment where players are able to concentrate on their daily practice even by night.

The key requests of the client during the LED lighting renovation project at Rissho University's Kumagaya Campus, which includes a full-scale athletics stadium with a 400m track and artificial turf infield as well as six tennis courts, were that illuminance levels match or improve upon those of the existing HID floodlight installation, whilst also maximizing uniformity throughout the entire area of play. The LEDioc FLOOD AVANT class400 wide-angle LED floodlights which were selected following extensive assessment of a number of different options, produce a luminous flux of 77800ℓm with a maximum power consumption of 427W, delivering a pleasing lighting environment that contributes to uniform levels of brightness with significant energy savings. Installation of the fixtures required delicate adjustments to the amount of light hitting the target area, and the provision of an angle table which allowed simulations to be performed in advance assisted greatly in increasing the accuracy of execution, as the aiming angles of the floodlights could be adjusted through the installation process with a focus on minimizing any unevenness in light distribution. Following completion of the works, both the athletics stadium and tennis courts now enjoy increased levels of brightness thanks to LED lighting, creating a night-game environment that is mindful of glare.
