Machida Municipal Athletic Stadium (Machida GION Stadium)Machida City, Tokyo
A high quality lighting environment created through glare controlled sports lighting, and entertainment lighting to accentuate the drama of sporting moments
Add to My ListLocated within Nozuta Park which is surrounded by the abundant nature of the Tama Hills area, the Machida Municipal Athletic Stadium was constructed in 1990; following a series of improvement works which took place from 2009 to 2014 it obtained accreditation from the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) as a Level 3 Athletics Venue, re-launching as a venue capable of hosting soccer matches at J2 (Japan Professional Soccer League, second division) level. Later, further improvement works were also carried out on the rear stand to increase the venue capacity to over 15000 spectators, and the stadium was re-launched once more as a venue meeting the requirements for obtaining a J1 level license. The venue is known amongst soccer fans as the home of the professional soccer club FC Machida Zelvia, who gained promotion to the top tier of Japanese soccer (J1) for the first time after being crowned J2 champions in 2023, and have continued their remarkable rise since; it is also widely enjoyed by many as a venue that hosts top level rugby matches, various athletics and sporting events, and municipal events.
Seeking to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions in addition to responding to the end of mercury vapor lamp production, the City of Machida conducted a program of improvement works across the lighting facilities at the stadium, updating to LED. With the lighting scheme planned primarily around use for professional level soccer, the existing HID floodlights were replaced with high-output LEDioc FLOOD DUELL 1400W type floodlights. With roof mounting of luminaires made possible thanks to the improvement works on the rear stand, the lighting scheme was designed to deliver uniform illuminance levels from six sides (main stand, rear stand, 4 x lighting columns). The narrow beam angle of the LED floodlights has allowed for the number of units mounted on the tall lighting columns to be reduced, effectively managing the brightness levels experienced by those both in and around the stadium whilst delivering average illuminance levels of 2000ℓx, which more than satisfy the minimum J League requirement of 1500ℓx.
Additionally the stadium is the first in Japan to integrate color changing LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR floodlights into the soccer stadium lighting scheme, heightening the atmosphere and excitement of the stadium experience with kaleidoscopic displays enabled by DMX controls. The ITACS-LC lighting controls system which operates the lighting scheme in its entirety was customized for this stadium, and the ease with which managers and users can operate it through simple touchscreen controls are a key feature. With bright, comfortable light at pitch level and stadium lighting to accentuate the exciting sporting moments taking place there, the result is a first-class lighting environment.
