Kumagaya Sports and Culture Park Athletics StadiumKumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture
High-level sports lighting environment delivered by updating to LED floodlights designed with consideration for their surrounding environment to counter light pollution
Add to My ListThe Kumagaya Sports and Culture Park is home to a variety of sporting facilities, including an athletics stadium, a rugby field, and the "Saitama Prefectural Kumagaya Dome" indoor sports facility; the verdant site also boasts an array of natural features including a waterfowl pond, and is widely enjoyed by locals as a venue not only for sports, but also for relaxation. Opened in 2003, the athletics stadium is equipped with an all-weather 9-lane 400m track, and is certified a JAAF (Japan Association of Athletics Federations) Type 1 venue. A top-tier sporting venue at national level, it hosts numerous athletics competitions and soccer matches. With a capacity of approximately 15400 spectators, it features as a home to WE League (Women's Professional Football League) side Chifure AS Elfen Saitama.
In March 2025, prefectural authorities carried out renovation works on the lighting equipment at the stadium, which saw the existing HID floodlights replaced and updated to LED lighting. Special consideration was given to the avoidance of light pollution when selecting fixtures, due to the residential areas and agricultural land in the vicinity of the site; the LEDioc FLOOD AVANT Light Pollution Prevention type class 1300 floodlights installed on four lighting towers deliver a high quality lighting environment suitable for competition level events, whilst restricting light leakage into the sky and surrounding areas. Additionally, LEDioc FLOOD DUELL 1500W type floodlights have been installed above the stands to brightly illuminate the stadium and ensure sufficient illuminance levels are maintained. For the lighting design process, 3DCG together with the iVR-360 lighting environment simulation system were used to assess within a VR (virtual reality) platform the brightness levels emanating both from within the stadium and from nearby houses. Additionally, iVR-360 was used to verify in advance any potential incoherence between the LED floodlights and the architecture in place, as well as the directionality of shadows and shade; this made it possible for construction to be carried out exactly according to the design plans, also confirming that the specified lighting requirements were satisfied. Furthermore, much consideration was given to the avoidance of high glare light clusters when looking directly at the lighting columns, through the use of high-output fixtures to reduce the number of installed units, and their installation in a cross-aiming arrangement.
For the lighting controls, the implementation of ITACS-LC system allows for all operations and settings to be easily executed on a graphics based touch-screen panel, while also allowing for remote operation from the control room via a tablet. Controlling lighting patterns appropriately to the purposes and required illuminance levels of each sport, the system contributes towards improved convenience in facilities management.
