Racecourse lighting installation makes possible the hosting of races with later start times even during winter
Add to My ListLocated in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture, the JRA (Japan Racing Association) operated Nakayama Racecourse hosts the popular "GI Races" series in addition to regularly hosting official JRA events. A venue that has been graced by many a memorable contest through the years, it is home to three different courses (grass; dirt; obstacle), and is classed alongside the Tokyo, Hanshin, and Kyoto Racecourses as one of the four main racecourses in Japan. The course is also notable for featuring most pronounced changes in elevation of any 10 JRA courses - a change of 2.2m in elevation along just the 310m home stretch often leads to races that spectators cannot take their eyes off until the very end, making it a course that continues to captivate and excite many racing fans.
Aside from the racing itself, the venue also provides attractions such as events where visitors can interact with the horses, as well as playground equipment for children, and a varied food court area.
In November 2023 the JRA carried out works to install exterior lighting facilities at the course, with the principal aim being to ensure the requisite track illuminance levels could be maintained even in the late races during the winter months; thanks to the addition of lighting at the track, races can now be held with later start times than had previously been possible. High-efficiency, glare suppressing LEDioc FLOOD ZEST class 1100 floodlights have been newly installed on the watchtower, concrete pillars, and rooftop of the spectator stands, delivering a next-level light scene where glare and brightness are tightly controlled. With the scheme having been designed for use during races and also for training on the dirt track, illuminance levels more than matching the racecourse standard 110ℓx are delivered across both the turf and dirt tracks, with an original vertical illuminance level set for the finish line area. Even during the shorter days of the winter months, the late races and the excitement around them can now continue to be enjoyed under the uniform light delivered through a combination of wide, medium and narrow beam floodlights, which maintain the necessary illuminance levels.
