Creating a bright and pleasant lit environment for matches at night, mindful of avoiding light spillage into surrounding areas
Add to My ListLocated in the historical city of Kyoto, the KYOTO Institute of Technology is a National University with a global reach. Through a unique academic culture cultivated by the environment of the city and espousing an exploration of knowledge, beauty and skills, the university counts amongst its alumni a plethora of talented individuals who have gone on to make great contributions to academia, art, culture and industry, as they follow its founding principles of ART×SCIENCE / LOCAL×GLOBAL / TRADITION×INNOVATION. Conveniently located around 8 minutes by foot from Matsugasaki Station on the Kyoto Subway Karasuma Line, the Matsugasaki Campus is equipped with a comprehensive range of sporting facilities, including grounds, gymnasiums, tennis courts, martial arts halls and training areas, and it is widely and actively used by students as a place to enjoy extracurricular activities.
In March 2025 the KYOTO Institute of Technology carried out lighting renovation works at its sports ground and tennis courts, installing energy-saving, long-life and environmentally conscious LED lighting, driven by the dimming of the existing installation through aging, in addition to the trend of HID lamps such as mercury vapor lamps and metal halide lamps being discontinued from production. The proximity of residential areas in the vicinity meant that consideration of restricting light spillage and glare into the surrounding areas was a non-negotiable factor, resulting in the selection of LEDioc FLOOD AVANT class 400 LED floodlights for both the sports ground and tennis courts; the combination of wide and medium beam angle models and adjustment of irradiance angles has ensured delivery of a comfortable, efficient and pleasant lighting environment. Prior to the renovations there had been a wide range of requests regarding nighttime conditions at the sports ground from all quarters - from the lacrosse club who wished for increased light levels, to the American Football club who had difficulty in seeing the ball at night, and the soft tennis club who highlighted lighting failures in areas which they wished to see fixed. Lighting conditions have been greatly improved at both sites following the update to LED lighting, with both becoming much brighter and creating a pleasant lighting environment for nighttime play; the improvements have drawn much positive feedback, with students commenting positively about improved ball visibility and satisfaction amongst club members, in addition to the ease of use and convenience of the improved facilities.
The key drivers for lighting renovation works at the Matsugasaki Campus sports ground of the KYOTO Institute of Technology were the decrease in illuminance due to aging of the existing installation which used mercury lamps and sodium lamps as light sources, and also feedback from students who use the facilities beyond daylight hours, requesting an increase in illuminance levels. The location of the site being so close to nearby residential areas meant that the minimization of light pollution was of paramount importance when creating a lighting design scheme for the conversion to LED, and it was through these considerations that ultimately the compact and highly efficient LEDioc FLOOD AVANT class 400 floodlights were selected for the project. With the grounds being used for a variety of sports including lacrosse, baseball, and rugby, an illumination level of over 100ℓx is maintained in order to ensure clear visibility of the ball irrespective of the sport, allowing for games to be played comfortably at night. A focus upon avoiding glare has seen a combination of wide and medium beam angle models mounted on newly installed lighting poles, and the provision of two circuits per pole makes it possible to light one side only, meaning that in the event of any issues with one circuit, the other circuit can be utilized to ensure continuity and thereby improve operational flexibility and maintainability. Of the six tennis courts at the site, the three on the northern side are equipped with lighting facilities, and it is these where the installations were upgraded to LEDioc FLOOD AVANT class 400 floodlights mounted on 10 meter high poles as per at the sports ground, to ensure an illuminance level of 450ℓx; producing levels of brightness on a par with 1000W metal halide lamps, they contribute to energy savings whilst creating a comfortable lighting environment that allows players to concentrate on their game even at night. Both the sports grounds and the tennis courts have become markedly brighter following the upgrade to LED lighting, and the results have been pleasingly well received by students.
