A change to LED lighting for the theatre for Japan's colorful summer Awa Odori Festival cuts power consumption by roughly 70%
Add to My ListWith origins in Tokushima Prefecture, Awa Odori Festivals have a history of more than 400 years, and are one of Japan's traditional performances. Of the festivals, the Tokushima City Awa Odori Festival held each year over the O-bon period of August 12-15 is the largest of the many Awa Odori Festivals held throughout Tokushima Prefecture. The yearly turnout is more than 1200000 people, and theatres are set up in various locations in the city. The Aibahama Theater is the closest to both the JR Tokushima Station and the bus terminal, and is the largest paid theater, with a capacity of roughly 10000 people. A colossal amount of power is required temporarily during the Awa Odori Festival period, so the Tokushima City Tourism Association, searching for ways to reduce power consumption at the Aibahama Theater, implemented renovations changing the lighting from the conventional mercury lamps and incandescent lightbulbs to LED lighting. After an investigation and comparison of LED lighting (floodlights) from a number of manufacturers, 100W LEDioc LED EYE LAMP SP were selected. They were selected due to their ability to be installed as temporary lighting with holders/vices, their suitability, from lightweight lamps and separate power sources , for installation on temporary lighting towers (pipes), and their translucent-white (diffusion-type) front covers that suppress glare. They also guarantee a brightness greater than what was previously provided. Compared to the previous lighting, the number of lamps has been increased while power consumption has been reduced by roughly 70% and brightness has risen by a factor of roughly 1.6. Based on these results, a switch to LED lighting for other theaters in years to come is being investigated.
