March, 2023

The Osaka factory of Meiji Co., Ltd. located in Takatsuki City, Osaka has a giant chocolate bar shaped panel measuring 27.59m in height and 165.95m across, which was installed at the time of the reconstruction of the factory building nearby railway in 2011. It has also been recognized by the Guiness World Records as the largest plastic advertising board in the world. Modelled on the shape of Meiji Co., Ltd.'s long-selling Meiji Milk Chocolate bar, the giant board affectionately known as "Big Milch" which would equate to 470000 of the actual chocolate bars, also serves a dual purpose as a color screen for the various industrial equipment and facilities placed behind it.

As the existing HID floodlight installation illuminating the panel had gradually deteriorated over time, in line with its energy savings measures Meiji Co., Ltd. undertook lighting upgrade works to replace the installation with LED lighting in March 2023. Upon carefully considering how to illuminate the panel evenly and without any dark patches, measurements were made of the illuminance levels and reflectivity on the panel from the existing HID installation when deciding upon the number of units to be installed, and their output level. A desire to ensure the smooth and rich appearance of delicious chocolate would not be diminished saw the selection of LEDioc FLOOD NEO class 80 floodlights in incandescent color type to illuminate the panel. Maintaining the existing illuminance levels whilst reducing the number of installed units from 64 to 48, the new scheme also contributes greatly towards energy savings.

Clearly visible from carriages of the JR Kyoto Line trains that run nearby, "Big Milch" is also a popular photo spot for visitors who take part in tours of the factory. Changing in appearance with the changes in natural light throughout the day, and then under the illuminations by night, it is hoped that this "Delicious Scenery" will continue to be enjoyed and savored as a local symbol.
