Situated on its upper stream, the scenery around the Awamata Falls is amongst the finest that can be seen in the Yoro Valley. With a drop of 30m and a length of 100m, the sublimely beautiful sight of the water spraying as it glides down the gentle, slide-like rock face has led to the popular waterfall being renowned for fascinating those who see it. With a nature trail of around 2km established around it, there is ample scope for scenic walks whilst enjoying the beauty of the falls and the valley. Until recently, the illuminations of the late autumn turning of the leaves had been organized and implemented by the Yoro Valley Hot Springs Travel Association - a private enterprise; thanks to a combination of a budget revision in Otaki Town and grants from the national government however, upgrade works have been carried out to make a permanent installation of LED luminaires for lighting displays. Maintenance and management of the scheme going forward has been entrusted to the Yoro Valley Hot Springs Travel Association.

Creating imagery from a new perspective to differentiate it from that of the daytime, the waterfall illuminations effectively utilize the ability of the color-changing LED floodlight LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR to freely and smoothly reproduce a kaleidoscopic spectrum of colors, and provide the scene with an additional flourish. The illuminations which run throughout the year are programmed with a variety of lighting displays scheduled to create magical settings by complementing seasons, times and events such as Golden Week*, firefly season, the summer holidays, the autumnal turning of the leaves, year-end and New Year, amongst others. (* Week of consecutive public holidays in early May)

As they change through events and seasons, it is hoped that the Yoro Valley illuminations will capture the imagination as a new tourist attraction and link to a revitalization of the wider region.
