Higashi-Kyushu Expressway is a national, high-speed expressway with a total length of 436km. It starts at the city of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, runs through Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, and finally reaches Kagoshima Prefecture's Kagoshima City.
In December of 2012, the areas between the Sumie, Kitagawa and Nobeoka JCT interchanges were opened. And the 20.4 kilometer extension of the expressway between Saiki Interchange and Kamae Interchange was opened on 21 March 2015. As a result, Oita and Miyazaki are now connected by an expressway.
Lighting fixture installation was a major component of the works since 45% of the extension involving road tunnels. The requirements for tunnel lighting have increased dramatically in recent times too with demands for improved driving comfort and reductions in both maintenance and management costs. Fixtures that conform to the proposed "LED Road/Tunnel Introduction Guidelines" were used, ensuring the realization of a standard brightness while reducing power consumption (to ensure an overall power conservation). LED light also has good color-rendering, which contributes to a comfortable drive for motorists because the tunnel interior and road surface 'feel' bright.
