The bespoke design of the integrated LED street luminaire is in keeping with the designs of the other unique street luminaires already installed in the vicinity.
The city of Hiroshima which has long been known as a "City of Water" conducts its town planning to make the most of water and greenery, and as such, it is promoting the establishment and development of attractive waterside spaces. These urban green spaces have been established alongside rivers running through the center of the city, providing places of rest and reflection which are held in great affection by its people.
Looking to push forward with energy saving measures, the city is updating the street luminaires lining the western and eastern riverside green spaces to LED, starting with the installation of specially designed street luminaires with integrated LED units, along the left and right banks of the western riverside space (between Midori-Ohashi and Mifune Bridge). Bespoke street luminaires supplied by IWASAKI Electric Co., Ltd. installed across both the eastern and western riverside spaces illuminate the promenades and make them feel safe even at night; moving with the times, the light source used in them has been updated, with HID lamps replacing the existing mercury vapor lamps. Seeking both to stay faithful to the shapes and forms of the luminaires that preceded them, as well as maintaining the requisite illumination levels, the assessment of various options resulted in high-efficiency LED units being selected as the light source of choice to be used in the new bespoke luminaires, whose internal specifications were designed from scratch. With a color temperature of 5000K, the cool white light is consistent with the ambience of other existing street luminaires installed in the surrounding areas, and helps to create a harmonious nightscape.
As the updating of street luminaires along the riverside spaces to LED continues to progress, the safe and pleasant light provided will allow people to enjoy activities such as walking and jogging along the promenade with the sense of freedom and openness that comes with being by the water.
