Situated on the JR-WEST Sanyo line, JR Nishi-Hiroshima Station can be found in the Nishi ward of Hiroshima and acts as a transport gateway for the western part of the city. As part of various renovation and regeneration works, in addition to the installation of an elevated walkway crossing over the tracks, the station building itself was also converted to an elevated building sitting over the tracks, reopening in 2022 following comprehensive renovation works. Following the reopening of the station, the City of Hiroshima commenced a program of renovation works for the station plaza area by the South Gate of the station, which were completed in September 2023. Planning for improved convenience, bus and taxi bays were repositioned, and passageways were designed to enable smooth and safe transfers between different modes of public transport.

In designing the lighting scheme, its appearance during daylight hours was also factored in as a key consideration. As a result the luminaire selected to illuminate the passageways and roundabout was LEDioc AREA QUALLIS type-D, and the compact and lightweight LEDioc ROAD S was chosen to illuminate the roads; both offer the benefit of blending smoothly into their surroundings by day. LEDioc BRACKET luminaires were installed to illuminate the pedestrian shelters, distributing light in both directions vertically and also making use of reflected light to create a pleasant lit environment; the use of incandescent color light in these luminaires also harmonizing with the soft glow emanating from the glass-paned station building.

Whilst operating in a high footfall area presented the challenge of necessitating works to be carried out only during nighttime hours, the result is a station plaza worthy of JR Nishi-Hiroshima Station as it continues to develop as an ever more convenient and accessible transport hub.
