The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is a national research and development agency that through its oceanographic research work, undertakes activities supporting the promotion of improvements in scientific techniques and developments in academic research, as well as a greater understanding of our planet and the life. Established in 1972 to be the main base of JAMSTEC, the Yokosuka HQ features a wharf which serves as the home port of the JAMSTEC research vessel; amongst the fundamental technological developments in oceanography being promoted at the site, are observational research of the Earth's environment, research into the interior dynamics of the planet, and research into marine life and extremophiles (organisms that thrive in extreme environments).

With a view to energy savings, JAMSTEC undertook a program of upgrade works across the entire exterior lighting stock to LED at its site in January 2024. LED Solar Light LEDioc AREA D solar powered luminaires have been installed for the exterior lighting around the main building, with key features including their use of clean renewable energy, and the light they emit having a low impact on their surrounding environment. Active through nighttime hours, the LED solar lights are powered independently as they convert solar light into energy by day to store in their battery, meaning that even in the event of power outages resulting from exceptional circumstances such as natural disasters, the luminaires can not only continue to provide light but also be used as an emergency power supply (AC100V). At various different locations across the site, solutions such as LEDioc ROAD and LEDioc ROAD S street luminaires, LEDioc FLOOD AVANT floodlights, LEDioc AREA TOLICA-L, LEDioc AREA CELENE, and LEDioc AREA ALIVIO pole top luminaires have been effectively deployed to deliver energy savings and LED light that is mindful of environmental protection as it safely illuminates the premises.
