LED lighting scheme delivers energy savings together with a bright and comfortable lighting scene for a popular multipurpose sports hall
Add to My ListThe Tokamachi General Gymnasium is situated in a cultural quarter with the Tokamachi City Museum and the Tokamachi Information Center amongst its neighbors. Its main hall is large enough to accommodate configurations including 3 volleyball courts, 2 basketball courts, 2 tennis courts, 10 badminton courts or 20 table tennis courts; it is also equipped with seating for 560 spectators, in addition to a 165m lap running track. Equipped also with an indoor artificial turf pitch that can be used for baseball, futsal or gateball amongst other sports, in addition to a practice hall for table tennis, a climbing wall, and conferencing facilities, the venue is popular with people of the area as a place where many sports and recreational activities can be enjoyed. The venue has also earned plaudits for its hosting over 20 or so years of the preseason 'Tokamachi Tournament' for the local professional basketball team Niigata Albirex BB.
With a view towards advancing energy savings and reducing energy costs, the City of Tokamachi undertook repairs and improvement works to upgrade the lighting at the venue to LED in June to August 2023. Whilst making the change to LED, lamps and luminaires were selected to match the illuminance levels and specifications of the existing mercury vapor lamp installation; the resulting scheme offers a sense of familiarity and comfort, with the changes in some sections being as simple as replacing only the lamps. LEDioc HIGH-BAY θ luminaires have been installed to illuminate the two-story main hall, and the running track is lit under LEDioc HIGH-BAY Γ Simple Model luminaires, while the indoor sports area and two-story lobby make use of LEDioc LED EYE LAMP SP lamps.
The bright, uniform and comfortable lighting environment that has been achieved contributes greatly towards energy savings, and the scheme also continues to enjoy positive feedback from users, with many noting the improved light levels. The instant on/off switching made possible by LED offers ease and convenience for all users, and the installation has also drawn plaudits for providing the ability to create lighting effects during events, in addition to offering further energy saving benefits. With Tokamachi being an area known to experience heavy snowfall, the facility is very popular as a place where people are able to enjoy sports in a comfortable setting even during the winter months, with those using the indoor sports area for baseball practice also remarking that they are now able to see the ball more clearly than previously.
