Beppu City in Oita Prefecture is a very popular hot spring town in Japan, boasting the largest number of source springs and spring water volume in the nation. Most of the source springs are concentrated at one of the hot springs, Kannawa Onsen, and the sight of the steam rising from the various hotels, traditional Japanese inns and spring towers is well-known as scenery symbolic of Beppu, and has even been selected as a national important cultural landscape. Since 2002, the steam that rises everywhere all over Kannawa Onsen has been the subject of a fairytale-like illumination in which lights are shone upon the billowing steam to create an attractive scene that differs from its daytime facade.

Until now, HID color lamps had been used as light sources for the illumination using green or blue, but given the suspension of mercury lamp production taking effect in 2020, the illumination itself has undergone a partial overhaul. LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR full-color LED floodlights have been installed at four locations in the Kannawa Onsen area, and their ability to freely produce various colors of light has been leveraged to produce a lighting effect involving 20 seconds each of green, white, and blue played on-loop. The highly efficient and high-power LED lights contribute to significant reductions in power consumption and colorfully light the atmospheric townscapes to create magical nighttime scenery that seems to have been well received by visitors from both Japan and overseas.

The illumination generally takes place on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, as well as during various events showcasing the appeal of Oita Prefecture - Japan's leading hot spring prefecture - including at the 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament in Japan, where some of the matches were held in Oita City.
