about

Installation date

March, 2025

Inaugurated by city authorities in March 2025, the Nankoku City Symbol Road is a new segment of the Nankoku Ekimae Line Urban Planning Route, which connects JR Gomen Station and the Gomen Nakamachi Tram Stop Intersection. In conjunction with another section that was already partially open, the development represents a new urban axis expected to ease traffic congestion, revitalize the surrounding area, and ensure pedestrian safety. With Nankoku City being known as the birthplace of Takashi Yanase, the cartoonist and picture book author who created the much-loved character "Anpanman", monuments of popular characters have been installed along the newly opened Nankoku City Symbol Road, adding to the sense of bustle and individuality of the area. With the addition of the Yanase Lion Park at the intersection with the Yanase Takashi Road in the Gomencho Shopping Arcade, there is plenty for people strolling around the city to enjoy afresh.

Comprising two lanes and lined on each side by spacious sidewalks, the Nankoku City Symbol Road also benefits from a carefully considered lighting scheme to provide a heightened sense of safety by night. The sidewalk lighting is provided by Unis Flare LED pole lights which feature a simple design that blends naturally into the surrounding streetscape, while the compact LEDioc FLOOD LUNT floodlights selected to provide uplighting for the trees which line the road ensure brightness through a minimal profile, delivering a tranquil ambiance; all of the lighting in the scheme features warm color temperature to help blend with the surrounding setting. With consideration also given to preserving the aesthetics of the area by day, the LEDioc ROAD street luminaires installed at the intersections have been painted a bespoke shade of brown in order to complement their surroundings.

With due consideration given both to its functionality as transport infrastructure as well as the local culture and scenery around it, the Nankoku City Symbol Road and the inventive lighting scheme incorporated throughout it serves not only to enhance the charm of the city bearing its name, but also to support the everyday lives of its residents.
