Located in the south-west of Adachi Ward, Tokyo, Kitasenju Station is one of the foremost rail terminals in Japan, with a large numbers of passengers transferring there between the 5 lines of 4 operators - JR (Japan Rail) Joban Line / Tokyo Metro Chiyoda and Hibiya Lines / Tobu Isesaki Line / Tsukuba Express - which are linked to it. Acting as a vibrant gateway to the north Kanto region, the bustling commercial and shopping areas spread around the station's west gate are the largest in Adachi Ward.

16 years after work on the elevated pedestrian walkway was completed by the Kitasenju Station West Gate Urban Redevelopment Association in 2004, works were undertaken to update and improve lighting across the Kitasenju Station West Gate Plaza and other street illuminations in 2020. As part of the works to upgrade to LED the grouped area lighting masts which are tasked with illuminating not only the elevated walkway but also the wider plaza as a whole, a reduction in the weight of the existing luminaire mountings was also targeted. Led by the security equipment division, investigations and assessments of the mounting structures has resulted in a weight reduction of around a half compared to the existing versions. Existing HID lamp floodlights have been replaced by 6 units each of LEDioc FLOOD SPOLART floodlights in cool color temperature and warm color temperature models, with the lighting being controlled and adjusted to provide a whiter color during the summer months, warmer colors during the winter months, and a mixture thereof during other periods in between. The retention of the existing columns necessitated the advance preparation of detailed construction procedures, with a 70t rough terrain crane being employed in the task of replacing the luminaire mounts. Seeking to complement the vibrancy of the station plaza areas, the area beneath the elevated walkway where facilities such as bus stops are located has been furnished with an increased number of downlights, with the installation of LEDioc LED Downlight; furthermore street lighting for the roads around the west gate area has also been upgraded to LED, making the area feel brighter and safer at night. Given the front of station rotary area where the works were taking place was one where high traffic volumes would be expected under normal circumstances, construction works were limited to nighttime hours, exercising great caution with regards the impact of noise disturbance. The change to LED has created a lit environment that provides more light and a heightened sense of safety, whilst also advancing energy saving measures.

When conducting the lighting upgrade works for the Kitasenju Station West Gate Plaza and its surrounding roads, careful consideration was given to the presence of a vibrant downtown area nearby, and also the high volume of traffic the area experiences; construction works were therefore carried out with the utmost sensitivity towards noise pollution levels that may be encountered by traffic officers and others in the surrounding areas. Furthermore, access to the bus terminal and its connecting roads was restricted only between the hours of 10 PM to 5 AM on the days where construction works were taking place. The grouped lighting masts were equipped with 6 units each of the Incandescent and Neutral color of LEDioc FLOOD SPOLART floodlights, with the ITACS-DS lighting controls system being employed to create a seasonally coordinated lighting program which sees cool colors used during the summer months, warmer colors during the winter months, and nuanced blends of colors which transition throughout the springtime and autumnal periods in between, to complement the gradual changing of the seasons. The masts are also equipped with 5 units of LEDioc FLOOD SPOLART 210W which serve as backup luminaires in the event of power failures that may be caused by factors such as natural disasters. With the dangers posed by working on a lighting column at a height of 25m, the works to remove the existing luminaire mountings, re-paint the existing column, and then install the new LED floodlights was cautiously conducted with the use of 2 aerial work platforms. The upgrade to LEDioc ROAD luminaires has seen the streets become more brightly and pleasantly illuminated, with energy savings being achieved and the existing street lighting columns being retained.
