Delivering a high quality lighting environment meeting J League standards, with the latest in LED lighting
Add to My ListSet amongst verdant surroundings at the foot of the Washio mountain range, Kochi Athletic Recreation Park is a multipurpose park equipped with an extensive array of sporting facilities, including an athletics stadium, baseball field, gymnasium, tennis courts, and also ranges for shooting and archery; home also to a plaza with playground equipment and a cross-country course, it is a highly popular hub for sports and recreational activities.
In March 2025 the city authorities carried out renovation works on the lighting facilities at the athletics stadium, replacing the existing HID floodlight installation with the latest LED solutions. Certified as a Class II athletics stadium by the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) and as a Class I athletics stadium by the JAAF (Japan Association of Athletics Federations), it is a venue capable of hosting large-scale competitions such as the Japan Championships and also international level competitions. Its lighting equipment was initially installed ahead of hosting a National Athletics Meet in early 2000. Whilst the lighting satisfied facility standards of the time for track and field, and soccer, aiming adjustments were required to adapt to different events, and additional louvers were also required to prevent light spillage into the surrounding farmland. In addition to a need for updates to the lighting infrastructure due to aging factors, the key driver for the works was the admission of local soccer club Kochi United SC into the third division of the J League (J3), consequently necessitating a lighting installation in line with J League standards. In addition to ensuring the minimum illuminance of 1500ℓx required for J3 Standards, the updated scheme needed also to fulfil standards for athletics with the same arrangement whilst also delivering comfortable levels of visibility with dimming controls to suppresses unevenness of light, and reduce further than ever before the impact of light spillage into the surrounding area. The LEDioc FLOOD AVANT Light Pollution Prevention type class 1500 floodlights selected to meet this challenge feature proprietary light control measures to reduce the light spill into the sky and surrounding areas that causes light pollution, whilst delivering a high quality playing environment. Despite reducing the number of units installed from the existing scheme, the new scheme meets J League (J3) illuminance standards and provides high levels of uniformity across the whole pitch to deliver a high quality lighting environment. Adopting the Wi-CONNECTY wireless control system with the master unit installed on the rooftop and modules installed on each lighting tower, the scheme allows for the lighting to be controlled with ease via a tablet in the management office, providing the flexibility to make adjustments to suit different events - whether for track and field or for soccer.
In its guises as an athletics stadium that hosts a variety of track and field competitions, and as the home stadium of Kochi United SC, the venue provides a comfortably illuminated environment in which moments of sporting excitement can be played out.
