A plan to comfortably light one of Japan's prominently spacious new campuses
Add to My ListKyushu University is a National University that was established with the incorporation in 1949 of the old Kyushu University, which was founded in 1911 as Japan's fourth Imperial University. Since 2005, Kyushu University has been proceeding with a gradual partial relocation to its Ito Campus, located on the naturally blessed Itoshima Peninsula and boasting the largest acreage of 2700000m². The relocation of 3 undergraduate schools, 11 postgraduate schools / academic centers / engineering institutions, and 4 affiliated facilities has now been completed, and the spacious campus with its full range of leading-edge facilities is broadly divided into three zones: the West Zone, Center Zone, and East Zone. The West Zone's baseball ground was established as a facility principally for the university's extracurricular activities (rubber-ball baseball practice and competitions), and comes fully equipped with night-time lighting equipment. The brightness has been set at the general level for rubber-ball baseball (300ℓx for the outfield, and 500ℓx for the infield), with power saving high-output 830W LEDioc FLOOD DUELL LED floodlights installed to create a bright and comfortable lighting environment for night-time games. Light-bleed into the neighboring residential areas has been taken into consideration, and sufficient countermeasures against light pollution have been put in place, including angle adjustment and the installation of louvers for the outfield. Separate vehicle and bicycle lanes and a pedestrian pathway have been established in the 1.2km of space between the south gate and the West Zone in an effort to improve safety. Custom-specification LEDioc AREA ALIVIO LED streetlights have been installed as the lighting fittings lighting this route.Test cultivation fields for the university's Faculty of Agriculture are on both sides of the route, so light-pollution countermeasures are in place that take this into account, including rear reflecting panels and adjusted angles for the fittings. The 88 units of the custom-specification lights have been arranged in a staggered formation. They are dimmed to 50% during late-night periods and also shine with an original Kyushu University color as they safely light the roads with environmentally considerate light. Location appropriate lighting fittings have also been used for the area to the south of the Engineering Research Laboratory in the Engineering District, the parking areas, and passageways, with the installation of Kyushu University custom-made lighting equipment as streetlights to light the area around the south side of the laboratory. Light with superior color rendering and having a general color rendering index of Ra95 has been used to create relaxing nighttime scenery. Similar custom-made LED parking-area lighting fixtures have been used for the parking-area lighting, while LEDioc CEILINGⅡ LED ceiling lights have been have been arranged in the passages within the Engineering Research Laboratory (in the Engineering District) for a combination of reduced power consumption and a pleasant lighting environment. At Kyushu University, based on the Public Design Guidelines for new campus design, in addition to functional lighting including crime-prevention and safety for the light environment, concepts include the establishment of image through lighting providing effects that are "newsworthy" an"landmark-esque", as well as consideration to avoid artificial light-bleed into surrounding areas in order to protect the natural environment and plant ecosystems.
