Diverse yet united: Illuminating the Nanko Sky Tower in support of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan
Add to My ListCommencing April 12th, 2025 on the day before the opening of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan and running until October 13rd, 2025, the Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc. (KEPCO) illuminated the Nanko Sky Tower, a symbol of the Nanko Power Station as part of an initiative geared towards further boosting momentum for the EXPO 2025. Located in the Minami-Futo area of Nanko Port facing Osaka Bay, Nanko Power Station is an LNG thermal power station operated by KEPCO, which replacement plan is currently undergoing. The Nanko Sky Tower located around 4 km south of the venue site, is 200m tall and characterized by a triangular prism shape and features a white base with pale green stripes, seeing it nicknamed affectionately by locals as "Leek Boy". With the illuminations of the Nanko Sky Tower, a symbol of the Nanko Power Station visible from the Grand Ring and the southeast area of the EXPO 2025 site, the scheme for it has been devised to be enjoyed as an additional flourish of color to the scenery of the site. The aim was also to create a warm and gentle lighting display to send them who may have spent the day at the site home with a lasting warm glow from their Expo experience. Making use of the full color-changing LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR floodlights selected for the project, a varied lighting program has been put in place, including gradations based around green and blue, as well as around the blue and red theme colors of the EXPO 2025, and motions inspired by those colors. Resonation with the Expo 2025 theme of "Designing Future Society for Our Lives" and appreciating the diversity of every individual, the scheme was designed to be enjoyed across all demographics. Drew many visitors both from Japan and abroad, the EXPO 2025 concluded with great success. We took various measures to promote the EXPO 2025, which was being held in our local area, and our colleagues have been actively sharing information across social media and other platforms. As a local energy company, we are very pleased and proud that the illumination of Nanko Sky Tower at Nanko Power Station had been added splash of color to it.
Detailed discussions were held with the project managers at the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., in planning the illuminations of the Nanko Sky Tower, and the lighting scheme was created together with the cooperation of IWASAKI Electric - the two key themes of the display being "stillness" and "motion". Four base design patterns (stillness) provide a sense of serenity with their slow movements and gentle harmony of hues, lasting for 19 minutes and 30 seconds, and five patterns to grab attention (motion) provide a sense of awareness through moving effects, lasting for 30 seconds. Combining to created one 20 minute package, these are repeated three times per hour from 18:30 to 23:00 during the EXPO 2025 period. The overall concept was not to simply seek to make a visual impact, but rather to create a display comprised of natural colors and movements to create a sense of serenity and dynamism. A sense of comfort was emphasized through movements resonating with biological rhythms such as fluttering and human breathing, with consideration also given to diversity so as to be relevant and appreciated to anyone of any age or background, and the time schedule was also divided into sections to act as a time signal and furnish the flow of time with gentle accents. Situated around 4km away and visible from the EXPO 2025 site, the northern side of the Nanko Sky Tower is illuminated by full color changing LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR floodlights, with test runs and simulations having been carried out in advance in order to deliver a more effective lighting effect through a variety of colors. The lighting scheme was implemented based on the results of these, and the high level of simulation capabilities and control technologies demonstrated in reproducing the colors exactly as envisaged impressed greatly. The DMX controlled lighting program has offered low maintenance as it operated smoothly throughout the event, producing displays of overlapping colors in subtle gradations of a natural appearance, combining added dynamic movements to the base of calming lighting to create an impressive rhythm. It has been a privilege to see the illuminations themed around serenity enjoyed by so many, and to be able to create a lighting display that satisfied the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc, who have worked hard to build momentum for the EXPO 2025.
