Iwasaki Electric Technology Center "HIKARIUM" is a central base for technological development concentrating core research, development, and planning technology divisions. The facility is a four-story steel construction with a total floor space of 6,500m² and a total building area of 1800m², and was given the name "HIKARIUM" (a portmanteau of Japanese words for 'birth' and 'light') as a place to imagine new light based on the concept of "the light of the future born here". The structure has taken the motif of the gate of an old Japanese house, and has designed its external frames in the shape of such a gate, expressing the image of many people, things, and information coming and going through one. In connection with that exterior design, each of the floors has an axis running from north to south that serves as a multi-purpose area to encourage communication and collaboration between employees. Other innovations are aimed at creating synergistic effects, and these include prototyping areas to accelerate ideas into something tangible, and electronic meeting systems that enable meetings using tablets and monitors. Furthermore, in order to mitigate the effects of rising temperatures in the summer, the construction suppresses sun exposure, with the apertures on the east and west sides kept as small as possible, and made larger facing the north and south directions. Solar panels have been installed on the roof, and the building has received the rank of 'A' in the Saitama Prefecture Environmental Consideration System, which is a system that evaluates buildings on how considerate they are of the environment. Power generation equipment has also been installed as a BCP (Business Continuity Planning) measure in case of disasters. This has also ensured the capacity for self-produced power and established an environment that will allow business to continue in the unlikely event of a power outage.

Entrance, Reception Hall, Office Rooms (Office and Collaboration Areas)

The entrance, reception hall, and office rooms use lighting control that changes the brightness to match the day's schedule, including for before work, during work, lunch time, and after work. The collaboration areas have ceiling-recessed indirect lighting installed, which is adjustable from 2700K to 5000K to change color to match the fading sunlight and promote the formation of a circadian rhythm in workers. The lighting control system automatically controls brightness and color temperature in accordance with changes in the time and daylight, and can also be controlled via a tablet. It creates optimum lighting environments for a variety of uses and contributes to improved productivity and a worker friendly environment.

Large Meeting Room, Small Meeting Rooms, Reception Rooms

In anticipation of a variety of uses, the meeting rooms and reception rooms have presets for lighting scenes with suitable relevant light environments. The large meeting room has 4 scene settings, including using baselights that obtain overall brightness, downlights that create a light environment with a sense of contrast, a combination of lighting rails for use with displays, and meetings or presentations using a projector. Furthermore, movable dividers enable the room to be partitioned into 2 or 3 sections, and detailed scenes to match the room size and desk arrangement can be created via tablet. For the reception rooms, indirect lighting has been installed on the walls facing the entrance, greeting customers with bright yet soft light. Like the meeting rooms, these also can recreate lighting scenes in 4 patterns depending on use.

Illumination Display

Warm scenery with a focus on incandescent color is created during the evenings. LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR LED full-color floodlights are used to provide a full-color illumination display on the external wall on the JR Gyoda Station side, with attention paid to seasonal effects that will be popular with people in the region. The lights are on from dusk until 9 PM, and the full-color LED floodlights are controlled via a lighting effects program stored in the DMX controller that displays color changes matching the season in addition to the Iwasaki color of blue.

Prototyping/Testing Area

Located on the first floor behind the entrance, the prototyping/testing area is where the cutting-edge analysis and measurement equipment that is the foundation of product/technology development is aggregated and further improvements in technological capacity and quality are sought along with accelerated development speeds. Wireless individual variable lighting control is used here. Areas for illumination are selected as required to create a lighting environment of appropriate brightness.
