Higashiosaka City Hanazono Rugby Stadium IlluminationHigashiosaka City, Osaka
An expressive illumination for a rugby stadium beginning to carve out some new history creates some attractive nighttime scenery
Add to My ListHigashiosaka City Hanazono Rugby Stadium is a venerable rugby field that was opened as Japan's first rugby stadium in 1929. The National High School Rugby Tournament is held there over the year-end and New Year's holidays, and it is well-known as "High School Rugby's Holy Ground". In 2017, Higashiosaka City carried out the first large-scale renovation work on the stadium since 1992, which was completed in September 2018. A Rugby Museum and the latest equipment, including giant video devices and lighting, has been introduced at the venue, which has been reborn as a stadium worthy of its "Holy Ground" status and compatible with a variety of spectating styles. In addition, an illumination has commenced for the south-side main gate, which has a sense of presence even during the day with an impressive, grid-like design in the image of a scrum, creating an effect that further complements the appeal of Hanazono Rugby Stadium.
As the light illuminating the outer wall, which is about 20m high and roughly 190m wide, 26 units of 80W type LEDioc FLOOD FULL-COLOR LED full-color floodlights have been installed, and, using lighting-effects programs stored in the DMX controller (DMX512-A*), they produce seasonal color illuminations evocative of snow (white) from December to January, rape blossoms (yellow and green) from February to March, cherry blossoms (pink) from April to May, irises (blue, purple, white) from June to August, and autumn foliage (red and orange) from September to November. Furthermore, other lighting patterns are possible at special events, for example Japan's national flag (red and white) for when the national team plays, or a rainbow effect at other matches, which enables a variety of color-effects that produce attractive nighttime scenery that is a change from the stadium's daytime image.
*DMX512-A (from "Digital MutipleX") is a communications protocol established by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) used in the control of mainly stage and effects lighting. In recent years it has also been adopted in general lighting devices.
