about

Installation date

December, 2024

Located in the central-western part of Kochi Prefecture and renown as one of the most prosperous fishing towns in the region, the city of Susaki has long been home to aquaculture industries benefiting from the calm waters of the inner bay, and home to seafood caught off the coast of Tosa, which boasts a variety of fish species amongst the best in the country. The city is also blessed with a thriving production of vegetables and citrus fruits such as pomelo and ponkan, which benefit from the Kuroshio Current and tropical sunshine of the area.

Located in the Hamacho district and having operated since 1954, Susaki Fish Market is the oldest of its kind in Kochi Prefecture, and with a wide range of seasonal seafood landed there each season it is the second largest in the prefecture for catch volume. One feature of the market that marks it as unusual for a fishing port, is the absence of refrigerators or freezers - with the catch being sold in its entirety on the same day, the market is always abuzz with the lively auctioneering of traders who come daily to buy fresh fish.

With the existing market facility having been in use for a number of years since completion in 1977 and very much showing its age, the city authorities made the decision to rebuild the Susaki Fish Market. The new two-storey reinforced concrete building which was completed in December 2024 has a total floor space of around 2355m², with the building area being 20% larger than that of its predecessor; it is anticipated that as a new symbol of "Susaki: Fishing City" it will contribute greatly towards the development of tourism and commerce in the area. The lighting in the new fish market is provided by high color rendering LEDioc FLOOD NEO Vivid class 80 floodlights, which have been designed with a targeted focus on color rendering and spectral control in order to deliver a truly vivid reproduction of colors. With an extremely high average color rendering index (CRI) rating of Ra95, the light is more natural in color and brings out the freshness of the freshly caught seafood. Additionally, LEDioc CEILING HB type-F high-bay LED fixtures have been surface mounted on the ceiling of the building canopy to deliver a brightly illuminated work space, improving both comfort and productivity within the market.
