Iwasaki Electric is undertaking a full-scale deployment and delivery of Pulsed Xenon (PXe) sterilization technologies it has cultivated in the pharmaceutical field, applying them for use in the sterilization of containers.

Background: New challenges for the beverages industry, and the advantages of Pulsed Xenon sterilization technology

In keeping with an ever-evolving public consciousness of matters relating to health and wellbeing, recent years have seen growing demand for "natural" products that are free of additives and preservatives in the beverages market. The subsequent increase in importance of hygiene management in the manufacturing process has however brought with it new challenges, such as the thermal impact on products resulting from the high temperatures used in conventional sterilization methods, and the environmental impact of using chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide.

Pulsed Xenon sterilization is a revolutionary technique that instantaneously deactivates bacteria and viruses with a powerful momentary light pulse from a xenon flash lamp. With the effectiveness and safety of the technology having been proven in decontamination processes at pharmaceutical factories and in container sterilization at food processing factories, Iwasaki Electric has optimized it for use in the sterilization of beverage containers, following many years of research and development.

Features of Pulsed Xenon sterilization equipment: Innovation for beverages manufacturers

Environmentally friendly "Dry Sterilization"

As no heat or chemicals are used there is no thermal impact on the container, no residue is left, and no cleaning water is required. This allows for the provision of a safe product without compromising on the original flavor or quality of the beverage.

Comprehensive high-performance sterilization

Even short-term exposure has been proven to deliver a sterilization effect of over 4 logs (99.99% or more) against microorganisms such as E.coli, yeast, and mold, ensuring that product quality can be assured.

High-speed processing to maximize productivity

Able to keep up with high-speed filling lines producing hundreds of bottles per minute. As this method does not require post-processing, it also contributes towards improved productivity of the entire manufacturing line thanks to a significant reduction in processing time compared to conventional sterilization methods.

Compatible with a variety of container shapes

Able to handle a wide variety of containers, including PET bottles, paper cartons, and even caps and stoppers.

Future Outlook

Iwasaki Electric intends to establish this Pulsed Xenon sterilization technology as the new standard-bearer for hygiene management in the beverages industry. Moving forward, we will work towards its adoption by a wide range of companies including major beverage manufacturers, whilst also continuing to contribute to food safety and security through further ongoing improvements in the technology and expansion of its range of applications.
