Utilization of an Ultraviolet Sterilization System as a Part of a Comprehensive Quality Management System
Add to My ListYakult Honsha Sapporo Factory, which has a lot size of 27300m² and a plant area of 8900m², produces all kinds of yakults and dairy products. One production item, "Soful", a yogurt that comes in three variations of strawberry, light and plain, is totally produced at the Sapporo Factory for the whole Hokkaido market. In 2004, an ultraviolet sterilization lamp was introduced to the "Soful" production line of the factory. "Soful" comes in paper containers, so by setting the ultraviolet sterilization lamp on the container supply line, it aims to prevent the potential generation of fungi or bacteria such as yeast cells and mould. It is the first time that an ultraviolet sterilizer is used with a filling machine in a Japanese factory. The UV irradiation of approximately 10000 yogurt containers that are produced in one hour takes 3 seconds to sterilize. When the irradiation exceeds 3 seconds, there is a risk of burning or creating a bad smell, therefore an interlock mechanism is provided to cut off the irradiation through a shutter when it reaches a pre-determined level. In addition, by circulating cooling water of about 40℃ around the lamp, the luminous efficiency at startup is ensured and the rise of temperature during continuous lighting is kept under control.
