The Totsuka Underpass was finally opened on 25 March this year after a very long construction project managed by Yokohama City as part of the land rezoning plan involving the front of the JR Totsuka Station. The old Totsuka Railway Crossing on the northern side of JR Totsuka Station had become a traffic hindrance to local residents as it was one of the most prominent "closed crossings" within the city, being cut-off for as many as 57 minutes per hour during peak times. In order to resolve this "closed crossing" issue a nd to achieve a more uniform land use in the surrounding area, Yokohama City undertook to complete the Totsuka Underpass 10 years ago. The underpass is a dedicated car and motorcycle road with a total length of 661m (tunnel section: 311m) and a breadth of roughly 20m. The pedestrian-only Totsuka Railway Crossing Deck was completed in January of last year with passage being made safer by separating vehicles and pedestrians. East-West street traffic movements are now much smoother around Totsuka Station. The lighting fixtures used to light the tunnel section are LEDioc TUNNEL lights which are compact LED lighting fixtures specially developed for tunnel-use that contribute to large-scale power savings. They achieve maintenance savings with a rated lifespan of 90000 hours and provide a favorable lighting environment that enables safe and comfortable driving through the tunnel.
