Situated around 180km south of Tokyo, the remote and yet accessible island of Kozushima Village can be reached in 45 minutes by plane or 3 hours 45 minutes by high-speed boat; blessed with a year-round mild climate, the island is a place rich in nature where it is possible to gaze at skies that are abundant with stars. Looking to preserve the beauty of their star-filled skies and broadcast their appeal, Kozushima Village enacted numerous preparations ahead of its application to the International Dark Sky Places Program*1 - a scheme run by US non-profit organization the DarkSky International*2, the former International Dark-Sky Association, whose mission is to address issues surrounding light pollution. Extensive improvement works were undertaken across all exterior lighting installations on the island as part of these preparations, including the installation of road lighting and security lighting fixtures supplied by IWASAKI Electric Co., Ltd. that avoid light spillage into the night sky and satisfy DarkSky International criteria.

In order to adhere to the certification requirements of the program, bespoke modifications were made to existing LED road and security luminaires from the IWASAKI range; measures included the incorporation of specialist louvers to the security luminaires to avoid upward light spillage, ensuring a level horizontal installation angle for the security luminaires, and also changing the color temperature of the luminaires to a warm 2700K in order to minimize impact on the nighttime visual environment. With the installation on Tokyo prefectural road by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the upgrade of all street lighting in the island was completed at the end of March 2022. Acknowledging its all-encompassing initiatives to counter light pollution across the island, the entire island area of Kozushima Village was granted "Dark Sky Park" status in December 2020 - the first such site in Tokyo and all of its districts and jurisdictions, and only the second in the whole of Japan. With the installation of LED luminaires which fulfil demanding requirements, the island is now bathed in a gentle light which creates a lighting environment to preserve the charm of "Tokyo's Starry Island", where the stars glimmer in the night sky on a scale it is simple not possible to experience in the city.

*1 International Dark Sky Places Program
Set up by the DarkSky International in 2001, the International Dark Sky Places Program is a scheme celebrating outstanding initiatives that protect and maintain beautiful dark skies, free from light pollution. More than simply having brighter, more star-filled skies, certification for the scheme requires an extensive range of criteria to be met, including stringent standards upon exterior lighting, and the implementation of education and awareness programs around light pollution.
*2 DarkSky International (DarkSky)
Non-profit organization whose mission is "to preserve and protect the night time environment and our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting". Established in the US in 1988, the work of the DarkSky International now has a global reach, with over 70 branches across 24 countries.
