Greens Plant Chuetsu Co., Ltd.is a plant factory utilizing both sunlight and artificial light and features a combined space of 7200m² involving two 30m×120m greenhouses on roughly 1.5ha of land. Greens Plant Chuetsu's plant factory was completed in July 2013 on hillside land in Niigata Prefecture's Nagaoka City. The area is known for its heavy snowfall, so the plant factory has been designed on special snow country specifications. When there is a heavy snowfall, groundwater is used to melt snow falling from the roof and the area between the greenhouses has been made 10m wide so that heavy equipment also can be used to clear the snow when necessary. Baby leaf lettuce, watercress and lettuce are grown hydroponically all year round together with delicious vegetables. In order to compensate for the lack of sunlight that occurs from November until early March, a supplementary light system was adopted for growing the baby leaf lettuce. The number of hours of light have been increased in this period by automatically running high pressure sodium vapor lamps (EYE SUNLUX ACE 660W) during the 12am - 7am time period when the electricity cost is low. Meanwhile, sunlight is still used during the day. It has been proven that the high pressure sodium vapor light sources are suited for plant photosynthesis, so a stable production system can be maintained even in winter. The factory environment provides an average brightness of 3000ℓx.
