Mito's Kairakuen is counted among the Three Great Gardens of Japan, and has been known throughout Japan as a famous location for plum blossoms since ancient times. The vast park grounds are home to 3000 plum trees of roughly 100 varieties, and a Plum Festival is held every year during the season the plum blossoms are in full bloom. In 2018 it was held from 17 February (Sat) until 31 March (Sat), and from 3 March (Fri) until 21 March (Wed), the period during which the blossoms were at the height of their visual splendor, an illumination of the plum blossoms called "Walkway of Light" took place. As part of its "Light Scenery Project", Ibaraki Prefecture has commenced in 2018 a new year-round illumination of the plum, cherry, and pine trees along the southern cliffs of Kairakuen. The plum trees that bloom on the southern cliffs close to the temporary Kairakuen Station on the Joban Line that is established near Kairakuen for the period of the Plum Festival can be seen from the adjoining Lake Senba, and so in order to aim for the creation of more appealing nighttime scenery, the decision was made to use high-chroma and high color rendering LEDioc FLOOD NEO Vivid white-color class 90 LED floodlights as the light sources for the illumination. Compared to normal LEDs, these lights are better at reproducing color, and their light vividly expresses natural color shades to impressively illuminate the sweet-smelling plum blossoms in full bloom and enable the creation of some magical nighttime scenery that differs from that present during the day. The brightly lit southern cliffs also serve as PR information for the Plum Festival at Kairakuen, which for its duration was bustling with people enjoying viewing the plum-blossoms heralding the coming of spring.
