March, 2015

The first professional baseball game held at night in Japan was held in 1948, at Yokohama Park Baseball Field (Yokohama Park Peace Baseball Field), which was the predecessor of Yokohama Stadium. On the location where that baseball field once stood, the current Yokohama Stadium, home field of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars professional baseball team, was built in 1978. In 2015, the lighting equipment for the entire field for professional baseball outdoor night games was changed to LED lighting, with the introduction of Iwasaki Electric LED floodlights and lighting systems. It was the first time in Japan that the lighting equipment for professional baseball outdoor night games for the entire field was changed from HID to LED lighting, and enabled the realization of great power conservation along with a simultaneous improvement in the lighting environment. The change to LED consisted of renovations involving the replacement of the existing 708 1500W metal halide lamps with 660 high-performance and high-color-rendering LEDioc FLOOD DUELL LED floodlights (111.8ℓm/W inherent energy consumption performance), reducing overall power consumption by roughly 56% . The number of fixtures used has been reduced, while the brightness required for holding professional baseball matches has been guaranteed at a level greater than the previous one, and the design brightness is maintained at a fixed level from the time of initial installation until the end of the lighting's operating life with an initial brightness compensation function. At the same time, a reduction in the amount of power used initially has been made possible. The use of separately installed LED power supplies that enable a wiring length of 50m between the LED fixtures and the relevant LED power supply has made it possible to install the power supplies at the base of the steel pylons, reducing the load for each of the pylons.
